An Israeli army officer was killed overnight in the West Bank during an exchange of fire with Palestinian gunmen, the Israeli army said in a statement.
The soldier was part of a unit called to the barrier between the West Bank and Israel as Palestinian suspects approached it at one of the border crossings, it said. When they arrived on the scene, the Palestinians opened fire and in the gunfight the two gunmen and the soldier were killed, the army said.
The incident follows an upsurge of violence in the West Bank.
