(Bloomberg) — Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan said he regrets his comments at a rally about a female judge and sought the dismissal of contempt of court proceedings against him.
Khan “takes this opportunity to express his deep regrets over his unintentional utterances during the course of his speech at a rally,” said the written response sent to the court by his lawyer on Wednesday. Khan sought the dismissal of the case by the court that is scheduled to meet on September 8.
It is not known if the court will accept Khan’s response. In the last hearing, a five-member panel of judges did not accept Khan’s then response and ordered him to file a new reply.
After being ousted from office through a no-confidence vote in April, the former cricket captain has held massive public gatherings where he targeted not just his political rivals but also the judiciary and the military for orchestrating his ouster from power.
The legal proceedings against the cricket star turned politician stem from remarks he made against some police officials and a female judge at a public rally. Police in Islamabad has separately booked him under terrorism laws for making the threatening speech.
