(Bloomberg) — Malaysia’s High Court found the wife of ex-Prime Minister Najib Razak guilty on all three counts of graft, days after he was jailed for corruption, AFP reported, citing Judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan.
Rosmah Mansor was convicted for soliciting 187.5 million ringgit ($42 million) in bribes from the managing director of privately-held firm Jepak Holdings Sdn., according to the charge sheets. She is also accused of receiving bribes totaling 6.5 million ringgit from the company director between 2016 and 2017.
The bribes were for her assistance in securing a 1.25-billion ringgit project for the firm to supply power to rural schools in the state of Sarawak.
Najib began his 12-year prison term last week after Malaysia’s top court upheld his 2020 conviction for corruption in relation to 1MDB, a troubled state fund from which billions were siphoned. Rosmah’s trial began in 2018 as part of former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s efforts to root out alleged corruption that took place during Najib’s administration.
The court ordered her to enter her defense on the three charges in February 2021.
