Acela Dodges Amtrak Pullback With Most of Northeast US Untouched

Amtrak’s Acela and Northeast train services will be relatively unscathed by the carrier’s decision to scrap most of its long-distance service as a potential strike by railroad labor unions looms.

(Bloomberg) — Amtrak’s Acela and Northeast train services will be relatively unscathed by the carrier’s decision to scrap most of its long-distance service as a potential strike by railroad labor unions looms.

The Acela line — popular among the corporate, policy and legal set seeking the fastest train between Boston, New York and Washington — will continue on a full schedule amid the broader stoppage, Amtrak said in a statement Wednesday.

Amtrak canceled all long-distance trains starting Thursday as negotiations between freight-rail companies and unions continued, with a national strike possible as soon as Friday.

The company’s trains run on its own lines in the Northeast Corridor, while most of its other routes run on tracks owned and maintained by freight railroads, which could be affected by a strike.

Related Amtrak branches to Albany, New York; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and Springfield, Massachusetts, will also not be affected, the company said, adding that a small number of Northeast Regional departures would be impacted.
