Japan Lifts Tsunami Warning Issued on Tonga Eruption, NHK Says

(Bloomberg) — Japan lifted a tsunami warning for Iwate prefecture and all advisories for the area along the Pacific coast, broadcaster NHK reported.

Japan issued the notices earlier Sunday, saying the eruption of an underwater volcano in Tonga may result in waves as high as 3 meters (10 feet). Waves as high as 1.1 meters were observed in Iwate prefecture, NHK said.

While there may be further changes in tides and wave heights, authorities are no longer concerned about possible damage, NHK cited the Japan Meteorological Agency as saying. Tokyo Bay, Osaka Bay and the Seto inland sea weren’t included in the tsunami advisory.

Train services have been suspended in some areas along the coast and evacuation orders have been issued to more than 200,000 residents, according to local reports. Several boats capsized or were damaged in Kochi and Tokushima prefectures, Kyodo News reported.

No serious injury or damage was reported, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported as of 2 p.m. local time Sunday.
